A Real-Life Tervigon?

by SandWyrm

In the comments for my last battle report, Ghengis Vaughn said...

"I apologize for posting out of context of the current thread but could you please tell me what kind of bug that is for your initial picture? It really bothers me on some level and I don't know why. I think its that weird indentation in the middle of its back where those little "vessels" appear to have popped. I had to stop reading your batrep and go back to look at it several times. Again, sorry for the random post. It just really freaks me out."

According to Wikipedia, it's a Belostomatidae, or "Giant Water Bug". It lives in North America, South America, and East Asia. Those "vessels" on it's back are eggs, which the male carries around after the female lays them there. It's also known as the "Toe Biter" bug. Depending on the sub-species it can be anywhere from 2 - 12 cm long.

Here's the full article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belostomatidae

An excerpt:
"They often lie motionless at the bottom of a body of water, attached to various objects, where they wait for prey to come near. They then strike, injecting a powerful digestive saliva with their mandible, and sucking out the liquefied remains. Their bite is considered one of the most painful that can be inflicted by any insect; the longer the bug is allowed to inject its saliva, the worse the resulting bite, and as the saliva liquefies muscle tissue, it can in rare instances do permanent damage."
Sounds like a proto-Tyrannid to me. :)

I've never seen one in person, but I haven't been looking (or wading barefoot through creeks) either. :)

  2. If you described half of insects/marine life to random people, they'd think it was science fiction. Hell, a lot of real things make less sense than fictional critters.

Weird as they are, I think they're awesome.

  7. Ok now I have 3 visions floating around in my head instead of 1. Those creepy egg sacks, a bug burrowing into my foot and something injecting digestive saliva....lesson learned: Be careful what you ask for.
