Reader Email: 4 Things My Army DOESN'T Have

by SandWyrm

Otoshigo Writes:
First, I really enjoy the Back40K; you guys do a great job on there.

As you might have guessed from the subject line, this is going to be in reference to your '4 Things' post from awhile back. I've read it and re-read it and I think it has improved my list building, so thanks for that.

I have a special request however. I have been playing a lot recently with a pure Grey Knight army. So, no Inquisitor, no stormtroopers, etc. My question for you is, how do I meet the '4 things' criteria with only Grey Knights? Can it be done? I picked up a bunch of models used, so I'm not limited by that (well, I only have one dread built atm...) Any assistance on this would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know what to tell you that you don't already know. Pure Grey Knights just don't have all the tools they need to meaningfully compete on the 5th Edition tabletop. Even with Stormtroopers they're forced to spam meltas in order to make up for their lack of effective long-range anti-tank. The missile launcher/lascannon Dred is all you've got and it just sucks.

Were I in your shoes, I would take a Marine (Codex, Wolves, or Blood Angels) army with =][= allies and paint the whole lot up as GKs, even though they really aren't. That way you can at least pretend they're pure.

The good news is that it the rumors are firming up for a Dark Eldar release this Autumn, with a combined Inquisition Dex sometime in the November-December timeframe. So the new toys are on their way.

Farmpunk, what do you think?

  1. I've noticed a difference since I've tried using the "4 things" style.
Also, maybe link back to it, yet again, haha.

  3. I hot-linked some of the text in the opening paragraph.

Looks like Farmpunk is brewing his response in a separate post.

  4. (Otoshigo's alter-alter-ego) I'd like to say, "Thanks for nothin'!", but I knew what the answer was likely to be before I asked :-) Purse from a sow's ear, blood from a turnip and all that... I started playing the Grey Knights for fun and it looks like that's how they are going to have to stay - for fun. They still look cool :-)
