Imperial Guard Artillery Company?

by SandWyrm

I thought I'd share an IG artillery list that I came up with recently for someone on Librarium Online.
HQ
245 Company Command Squad w/Creed, 4 x Plasma, Chimera (Hull Hvy Flamer)

Troops
125 Platoon Command Squad w/4 x Melta, Chimera (Hull Hvy Flamer)
100     Infantry Squad w/Grenade Launcher, Autocannon, Commissar
65     Infantry Squad w/Grenade Launcher, Autocannon
65     Infantry Squad w/Grenade Launcher, Autocannon
105     Heavy Weapons Squad w/3 x Lascannon

125 Platoon Command Squad w/4 x Melta, Chimera (Hull Hvy Flamer)
100     Infantry Squad w/Grenade Launcher, Autocannon, Commissar
65     Infantry Squad w/Grenade Launcher, Autocannon
65     Infantry Squad w/Grenade Launcher, Autocannon
105     Heavy Weapons Squad w/3 x Lascannon

155 Veteran Squad w/3 x Melta, Chimera

Fast Attack
145 Hellhound w/Hull Multi-Melta
 75 Armored Sentinel w/Plasma Cannon

Heavy Support
150 Medusa w/Hull Heavy Flamer, Enclosed Crew Compartment
150 Medusa w/Hull Heavy Flamer, Enclosed Crew Compartment
160 Manticore w/Hull Heavy Flamer

Total: 2000 pts
Now let me explain how this list works:

The Manticore sets up in the middle of your deployment zone as far back as you can put it. The Medusas and Creed's CCS goes in front of it, with the 2 Autocannon blobs and the lascannon squads within Creed's command radius. This is your Anvil. Put the blobs forward. With the commissars attached, they'll be hard for an opponent to get through, so you'll shield your artillery with them.

The Hellhound, Sentinel, Vets, and both PCS squads go on a flank. This is your hammer. They will be what goes out to capture objectives or kidney-punch oncoming units. The Sentinel is for tarpitting large assault units for 2-3 turns. Keep it towards the middle of the table.

Creed is giving orders, but his squad's plasma is also your Counter-charge/Mawloc protection. His Chimera and the Artillery can also move up and flame anyone that makes it through your infantry blobs.

If you need to, you can outflank a Hellhound or the Vet Squad into those Lootas at the back of the table. :)

  1. looks a lot like one I came up with while I was toying around with IG artillery.

I still love the idea. I was humming "Boom. Boom. Boom. Let's go back to my room, where we can do it all night, and I can make you feel right. Oh-oh oh."

  2. I found it.

    Paul Lekakis.

this remake is much better than the other version I found.

the high treble of it still makes me cringe.

  3. I don't know about that one lone Sentinel. What do you think about swapping to a cheaper gun like a heavy flamer and trying to squeeze in two of them. That would seam to fit with a goal of harass and tar-pit better than a plasma cannon. The plasma cannon just jumps him way to high on the threat scale, and he's very easy to kill.

  4. The armored Sentinel is there for blocking purposes. He walks along the inside of your hammer-advance and tarpits things like Boyz mobs or assault marines while you deal with the other threats. AV12 isn't easy to krak open when you need 6's to hit and 6's to wound. Even a power fist will only 'wound' 50% of the time.

The only thing that would really compete with this guy is Marbo. But I really feel like an infantry gunline needs all the assault blockers it can get. :)

  5. Make that Hellhound a Banewolf and outflank it into those pesky Long Fangs, Devestators, etc.

  6. Yawn. Not much of an artillery company, more like a leafblower variant. An artillery company is all about using more throwers to get templates downrange, and enough basic infantry for security and labor. Write one up with two or more batteries of three tubes each and get back to us....

  7. Good to see you still have a little guard left in you. I don't think I've faced against guard since the last time we played. I've almost forgotten what a Chimera looks like.

to be honest, if you didn't feel there was enough BOOM! You could drop the hellhound and Chimelta vets for 2 more Medusa.

I feel you'd be severely limiting your tactical flexibility for the sake of more artillery, but to each their own. There's also something to be said for only 3 batteries severely limiting your tactical choices and tactical ability.

The single pie plate should do enough damage for the line squads to do mop up. You want to have some Meltas available for when the Medusa can't crack the 4 LRC's the Blood Angel player brought.

@ Hudson: SandWyrm and I have found the range on a Hellhound makes up for the AP of the banewolf. Hellhound can come on and hit anywhere on his half of the board. Bnaewolf gets about the first 20"

A competitive list needs more than just barrels. It also needs a way to break up the enemy's advance and grab objectives. If Nids hit you en masse, you're dead. The Hellhound, Sentinel, and Chimeltas are therefore quite necessary.

  10. @TGM

    I'm on a Guard kick again. :)

I played my Guard on Sunday down at the south store after playing some Tau with the Emo-Wing. It made for a nice contrast.

  11. haha, must of been one of the many past sunday's I got screwed over and couldn't go. Well I hope to someday face off again. Are you going to the doubles tourney?

  12. Yeah, Farmpunk and I will be there. I'm not sure what unholy union of forces we'll be taking, but we'll be there. :)

  13. So what happens when a psyker battle squad hits that giant unit and they run off the table?

Or a dedicated close combat unit out of a landraider gets to your blob? The problem with the medusa is the range issue. With pitched battle, you could corner deploy, but being in the center hurts you with the minimum range.

    Just my thoughts.

  14. 1) If facing a PBS, don't blob up. :)

    2) Do what guard always do against assault squads. Sacrifice a unit to let the others shoot. I never said you HAVE to blob-up. You can always deploy the squads separately if you have to.

    3) Medusas and Manticores, like all Ordinance, can always fire directly. Only the Colossus is explicitly prohibited from doing so.

  15. I was mistaken, I was thinking of the colossus. I think 2 griffons are better than 1 colossus anyday!
