I've got some experience with Mantic stuff before in the form of Dreadball, so I knew what to expect in terms of flash and material.

I've only had a chance to clean up a few of the Enforcers and only constructed one. I have to agree about the shoulder joints and right arm, the rifle and arm could easily have been one piece and some sockets for the arms would have been great. On the other hand, if the material behaves the same as the Dreadball figures, I know that some hot water will allow me to reposition these figures and get more variety out of them. For the price of approximately $2 a model, I'm happy with them.Obsidian3Dhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03987358994076703659noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4519319818452068646.post-76002262091894987882013-02-03T20:57:16.629-05:002013-02-03T20:57:16.629-05:00And GW isn't going to pass the savings on to c...And GW isn't going to pass the savings on to consumers once they've got the digital process down.wisdom like silencehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05285703926321028278noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4519319818452068646.post-57196626478270688612013-01-08T20:41:58.993-05:002013-01-08T20:41:58.993-05:00Wow this plastic-resin stuff is just horrible. The key is to do what Wyrd did...use a tried and true material - metal - until you make enough money to invest in REAL plastic. Wyrd also has originality on their side. Mantic doesn't. Mantic is garbage and destined to go down.

We had a saying at the last place I worked. "Don't be a worse them, be a better us." It means don't try to copy someone and do so poorly. Instead improve on your own thing. Mantic does not understand this - they are a worse GW. Wyrd has managed it.
Plastic setup costs ...Well... Wyrd has managed it.

Plastic setup costs have fallen pretty drastically. From half a million dollars for a small mold 20 years ago, to just 10-20K now. Which is what's behind the Plastic Soldier Company's success.

But to really make plastic viable for small production runs, you have to design the models and the molds digitally. So that the molds can be robot-machined cheaply. PSC is just 2 guys with a computer who contract out the manufacturing of their models.

But neither Mantic or Battlefront have embraced digital yet. They're still sculpting greens by hand and doing things the old way. Wyrd have gone the full-monty with digital sculpting and tooling. That's a higher initial investment in equipment and training. But it pays off in the long run.

GW is, I think, somewhere in between. They've done quite a few kits now digitally, but I think they're still holding on to the old ways for their metal/finecast products. They should have moved these to digital too, but they're a big company with a lot of entrenched interests. It's going to take some time.SandWyrmhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02265244938930651317noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4519319818452068646.post-91098067045433088952013-01-07T05:23:24.933-05:002013-01-07T05:23:24.933-05:00The problem with making plastics is the really hig...The problem with making plastics is the really high set up costs, I don't think mantic can afford to make decent figures in plastic right nowAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00942026055176482571noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4519319818452068646.post-51756701488643110592013-01-06T23:29:20.751-05:002013-01-06T23:29:20.751-05:00BTW: After writing this, I gently picked up one of...BTW: After writing this, I gently picked up one of the Enforcers in the above pics to texture it's base with pumice gel... and it's super-glued head popped off. It doesn't smell, and the only issue I have with it is that the resin crystallizes (like honey), and has to be heated in hot water to re-liquify it every 4 months or so.

But still, it has to be mixed, and if I'm holding parts together I can't do more than 1-2 joins at once before the stuff hardens and I have to mix more. Ugh!

I like the Corvis Belli designs, but not their model poses. If that makes sense.

I really think that Mantic is cutting their margins too thin. If GW is selling their new plastics at $33 for 5 guys, Mantic doesn't need to sell generic crap at less than half that. They need to sell good models for 2/3rds of GW's prices. I actually prefer GW's 2-piece snap-together kits to their multi-pose stuff. So if I were Mantic I'd sell low-cost (but high quality) 2 and 3 part snap together plastics for cheap instead of this bad 'multi-pose' stuff that really isn't. And how much does it really cost for better miniature concept art? It's not like GW is blowing my socks off with most of their new designs. They just execute better on the manufacturing end.SandWyrmhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02265244938930651317noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4519319818452068646.post-85764974639929472692013-01-06T23:12:08.360-05:002013-01-06T23:12:08.360-05:00I'm using Zap-A-Gap. But even if the formulation were better, there's still the issue of the model parts not fitting together cleanly enough for super-glue to adhere optimally.SandWyrmhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02265244938930651317noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4519319818452068646.post-7603443519130055772013-01-06T22:16:49.350-05:002013-01-06T22:16:49.350-05:00The idea of gluing these tiny figs together with 2...The idea of gluing these tiny figs together with 2 part epoxy blows my mind. That stuff is exceptionally messy, even if you take a lot of care - I don't know how you have the patience! I don't think I'd allow it in the same room as my minis, let alone use it on them.

The thing with Mantic is that very few other companies are competing with GW on price. There are great GW alternatives but the cost is high. For example, Corvus Belli's Sikh Akalis are a lot like these guys but look many times better:
http://www.waylandgames.co.uk/images/uploads/infinity/280204-0013.jpg
Problem is the Mantic figs cost $2.5 vs $10 for the Akalis. The GW competitors are geared for skirmish games and their prices would make collecting a large army prohibitive, even vs over-priced GW figs.Koronahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08250234754318025124noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4519319818452068646.post-11885915639985525322013-01-06T21:26:04.168-05:002013-01-06T21:26:04.168-05:00Interesting.

Krazy glue branded super glue worked just fine for me, and while I found the lack of options for poses and heads a bit disappointing, the models themselves work pretty well for their intended purpose.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
