The 2nd annual Indy Open is complete and I am proud to announce the results below.
I want to thank first of all the players that traveled from all over the country to join us in the midwest cornfields of Indiana.
I want to especially thank the staff that volunteered all their time to help run this event. It takes a lot of hours to make the kind of terrain we did this year as well as coordinate all the logistics. Thanks to Jason, Justin, Johnny, Chad, Todd, John L., Steve, Garrett, Keith, Greg, and John B. Couldn't have done it without you.
I heard numerous compliments such as:
"being the best tournament I have ever been to", or "the terrain was perfect and so balanced that it didn't matter what side of the table I was on", to "I loved the art paper idea. You don't have to worry about the terrain being moved because you traced where each piece is supposed to go", to "the terrain was beautiful and just the right size, not too big, with enough line of sight blocking, etc", to "we cannot wait to come back next year", and "I loved the dice idea".
I am sure there are things we need to improve on and I hope you all fill out the survey I will be sending out to you. We want to listen to your voices and make a great gaming experience for all to enjoy.
I look forward to hopefully seeing you on the battlefield at Adepticon and Nova Open. I thank Matthias Weeks and Mike Brandt for helping us with our event and giving us a great vision of what a gaming convention should look like.

Just so everyone knows how close the last few games were at the top.
ReplyDeleteGame 5. If Autin Brown would have survived 1 shot on his destroyer lord or the roll to determine which scythe keith's warlord was on was a 1 or 2 Austin would have been paired up against Hanz in round 6.
Game 6. If the game would have ended between dustin and brett on turn 5 dustin would have beaten Brett and went on to play Hanz.
Game 7. If the game would have gone to turn 7, Hanz would most likely have pulled out a close win.
How 1 die roll makes a difference. Great job to everyone!
You should probably indicate directly who was best general, ren-man, and best appearance, so they don't have to dig into the spreadsheet.
DeleteDude, two thumbs way up on this one. You did a great job on running that whole thing. Everyone seemed to be in a great mood. Yeah it was great! As much as you kept kickin me in the butt about getting to my tables. I knew it was just you just keepin an eye on the time, which you did a great job of.
ReplyDeleteThe only complaint that I heard from players bout the event itself was the low quality of the dice that Stelek had purchased for the community pool. A large minority of them were warped, incompletely stamped, etc.
DeleteEven those complaints were more jokes from my perspective. I purchased the dice. Stelek donated the funds.
DeleteThank you Gravy. Great Job
ReplyDeleteI'm curious about the appearance scores. Are they accurate? I ask because of how the awards were given out for appearance.
ReplyDeleteYes. But, the painting score was only part of the calculation for best appearance. After all the scores where calculated, there was a second round of judging made on the top 5 appearance armies to determine the top 3. That round of judging was not recorded in the spreadsheet.
DeleteYeah, the recorded appearance score was for RenMan. We took the top 5 scoring armies and each judge ranked them from first to 5th. Then we consolidated those rankings to determine best painted. Hulk was our unanimous pick for #1.
DeleteYou guys did a great job and were well organized. Venue was great for the event. Plenty of space in there. You guys really got a killer deal on it!
ReplyDeleteActually, I commend you on improving and just about all areas over last year.
Thanks Neil! I appreciate you coming!
DeleteIs it possible to access the lists of participants or at least the top 10?
ReplyDeleteI wasn't planning on posting them but eill consider it. I will post the basic ideas of each top 10 list next week.
ReplyDeleteWhy no mention of thanks to Andrew Sutton for sponsoring the dice?
ReplyDeleteThanks Andrew, that was very nice of you.
ReplyDeleteI will say that the dice is something every tourney should do big or small. It is relatively cheap and can easily be stored and reused the next year.
ReplyDeleteWe are thankful to all of our sponsors Nurglitch. That post comes later. Thanks for your comments though.
ReplyDeleteGreat tournament. I had an absolute blast! Terrain was very consistent from table to table with decent cover and lots of shooting lanes. The judging was solid, consistent, and fair. None of the typical "because I said so" and more of the "this is why we are thinking as we are." I will be a regular from this point on. I made a few new friends and had a great time doing it. I am happy with 4th place on my first go around.
ReplyDeleteEverything I am hearing from your guys' event is positive! Congratulations!
ReplyDeleteMaybe next year, if this tournament doesn't fall on the same weekend as the Bay Area Open, I will come over and play. I will however be at the Bugeater GT in Omaha that takes place on May 31st. You guys plan on going to that? probably a nice drive for you guys, but it won't beat the 22 hours I will be driving down there!
Congrats again on the successful tournament and look forward to seeing some army postings up here soon!
Also, did Stelek in fact make the trip or just donate some dice?
Putting up tonight. Gonna post top 4 lists and summary of the next 4.
ReplyDeleteStelek was planning on making it but had to cancel. He did donate for the dice. Many thanks to him and our other sponsors.
