Yeah, We're Playing World of Warships Now

by SandWyrm

With the rollout of the closed beta (and the lifting of the NDA), I finally got my invite to help test the beta for World of Warships. Farmpunk's been on there a bit longer, as he remembered to log in for the first alpha weekend. Anyway, the game is more fun that we thought it ever would be, and I had a VERY good game tonight with the St. Louis class cruiser after the rest of my team folded against an enemy team of bots. Killing all seven enemy ships myself.

That's two destroyers, 3 cruisers, and two Battleships. Half of them killed without any assists. Three of them (2 battleships and a cruiser) while I only had a sliver of life left in my health bar. But the 8-gun broadside of the St. Louis, combined with a faster reload Captain skill, some lucky gun-damaging hits, and a deft use of islands to block LoS let me pummel everything in my path.

If I don't kill at least 3 ships a game with this thing, it's unusual. :)

Anybody else here in the beta?

  1. I didn't know there were bots in the game.
Please tell me that will go away when the game launches, cuz multiplayer against bots is *yawn*

    1. Right now there's two play modes, one where you team up against bots, and another that's just like World of Tanks, where humans all play each other.

I usually play the bots because it's a longer wait to play the other mode. But you can pick either one. Frankly, WoT needs a bot-mode too. It makes for more pleasant chatter during the game.

  2. Want to play. When is the beta done?

Is the beta pre-dreadnought only? I thought it was supposed to be WWII?

    1. Dunno how long until the beta is over. Probably "When it's ready". But if you sniff around they might still accept new testers.

The game does have the WWII stuff, but like WoT you don't get to those until the middle tiers.

The Japanese Kongo class battleship is Tier V, and I think you get the Yamato at tier 10. The Langley is Tier 3, and you get all the US carriers up to the Essex class. The first US cruiser that actually looks like a WWII ship is Tier 5. The Cleveland I think.

There's no US Battleship line yet, nor is there a Carrier line for the Japanese. There's one premium Russian ship, and that's it. I presume that we'll see British and German factions later too, since it would be silly not to.

      Nobody has subs BTW.

    2. I applied for a pass, if anyone has any invites that would speed it up.

  4. I played for a week and hit the Fuso. This game is absolutely fantastic. It's been hard for me to pick up a paint brush... Username is Oakenhawk, obviously, if you want to division-up!

    1. Have you killed 7 bots when your whole team whiffed? I'm not saying I deserve a medal or anything, but it was pretty cool back when I first started playing the game.
