My first Apocalypse game

By TheGraveMind

Well, a couple weeks ago was EvilTed/Archfiend's Birthday and we had an apocalypse game. It was my first apocalypse and it was an experience. I had a lot of fun, I killed orcs, and I saw titans in action. It was a  good day to play 40k.

Tyranid to a Tournament

By TheGravemind

Tyranids, yep, back again.  I took my bugs to the tournament last weekend and did well with them. I had decided to use some units that I haven't used in a while. I used carnifexes and warriors, I was going to use venomthropes but switched them out at the last minute.

SandWyrm's New Blog: The M42 Project

by SandWyrm

No, I'm not quitting The Back 40K. Far from it.

But my hiatus this week has allowed me to think very seriously about how I want to spend my blogging time, and whether some of the 40K-related things I want to post about going forward are best suited to this particular blog.

Snortin' the good stuff...

by Anonymous Foodie

Not what you'd see in Dark Eldar schools

There was a point brought up in the comments section of one of my other posts, and it focuses on an idea that has been around since the dawn of time (or at least 40k).

The effectiveness of Wyches in combat is oft debated as being "an agoniser and a few punches that may do something for you".  It's the age-old addage of "How many S3 does it take to get through Power Armor?".

But there's something big that people aren't looking at when they say such things...

Flames nipping at our heels

by: farmpunk

Last night SandWyrm and I embarked on upon a new journey, and we tried a NEW GAME. We met up at Gamerz (SandWyrm wrote up a report about the store), and we played Flames of War.

The worst way to lose

by Anonymous Foodie

There are those times when you walk away from the table, and despite having lost the game you have won something else.  Some new insight into the game mechanics, perhaps a footnote to add to your own tactics or army list.

Mail Bag: Professions (for real this time)

by: farmpunk

From the Back40K mailbag:
Dear Back 40k,
Fan and Avid Reader Nicholas here. I was wondering, if it's not too personal, What each of you at the the back 40k does for a living. I question a blog paying the bills (and hobby supplies), so I wonder if it does, or if the blog is another aspect of the hobby to you lot.
Thanks for all the content, and I understand if this is a question you would rather leave unanswered.
Sincerly,
Nicholas
We answer for real this time. It's not Talk like a Pirate Day today. That is Sept. 19th.

Mail Bag: Nurgle Marines. (A pox on you all)

Another E-mail from the  Back40K's inbox:
Hey guys!  My names Chad, Outremer on the boards. . . Spag may have mentioned me.  I started playing 40k a few months ago and i'm planning on playing in the tourney at the south side Game Preserve this coming weekend.

From time to time I get interesting e-mails that float into theBack40K's inbox. Like this:

A Lesson To Learn From, GW!

By TheGraveMind

Many people have not been happy with Netflix lately. They separated their DVD and streaming services and have increased the cost. On top of that, their streaming selection has not been the best nor consistent. I've even heard that within the year they will lose their Starz Entertainment deal, taking away even more movies. Seeing as I don't have cable tv, I use the streaming in its place, and that is the only thing I'm now subscribed to. Well, I and many others, received an email today, which can be read HERE.

Spaguatyrine and Ardz Boys Semi-Final!!!!!!!!!!!

by Spaguatyrine

So I decided to switch back to Space Wolves after finding out there was no Dawn of War deployment.  Great move because my plan worked out well.  Of course I figured I would have to play grey knights which knocked me off the top spot at the invitational. But this time I was ready....

Revamping the Shadow Stalkers

by Anonymous Foodie

Every once in a while it comes time to look over your standard take-all-comers list, and trim the fat.  Who doesn't like tweaking things up?

I Am Jack's Sense Of Community

by SandWyrm

As I seem to be pissing off my friends the more I write, I'm going to take a break from the blog for a while and do something else. I'll come back in a week or two. We have other authors, they can post in the meantime. My Wife and Kids will be happy at least. :)

If you've got something constructive to say that you think I need to hear, feel free to leave it in the comments. I'll read them without responding or trying to defend myself.

What's Wrong With SandWyrm?

by SandWyrm

I'm hearing through back channels that a bunch of people are very pissed at me for my last post. The one that was critical of the hotel/location at the NOVA. I suppose that's a good thing, because it means I'm still respected. Otherwise they'd be yelling at me in person. :)

Comparing NOVA and Adepticon: Part I - Location And Hotel

by SandWyrm

Mike Brandt has the initial results of his NOVA surveys up, and according to him they're showing overwhelmingly positive feedback for the event. Such that he seems to feel that the Hotel was NOVA's only real failing.

Well, that's great. But I don't think the NOVA was so perfectly rosy myself. If you went to NOVA and had a 99% perfect time, then stop reading right here. Because over the next several posts I'm going to level some honest criticisms at NOVA and compare it to this year's Adepticon, which I also attended. With the goal of helping to improve both events.

Making A Point I'm Sure Will Be Lost...

by SandWyrm

I posted this comment to BoLS in reply to the usual "40K is not designed for competitive play!" nonsense that Cowman_Returns and Striker8 were spewing. I used a bad word, so it triggered a moderation. I dunno if it will get approved or not, but I thought that you guys would enjoy it.

Spaguatyrine: My Ardz Boys List

by Spaguatyrine

After reading the missions instead of playing my Space Wolves I have to take the grey knights.  How can you win and compete with a King of the Hill mission with only 6 scoring units?

Gamerz: Not What I Expected

by SandWyrm

I had the afternoon off from the Wife and Kids today, so I decided to try out a new game store down on the South Side. New to me, that is. The store has actually been around for 3 years, but I'd just never made it down there to see what it was like. Even though it's only a few miles west of the Game Preserve South.

Learning another language. Pending

By TheGraveMind

Not really 40k related, but sometimes we need a little break from it. This is more about life and interacting with the world. I've always felt that everyone should at least speak a second language, and honestly I think most people should know 3. Ya, that's right, three. When I go to Europe to visit Family, I visit some of my friends over there, and by the end of high school many kids are learning their fourth language. Over here, I hardly had learned my second language by the end of high school. Well there are things you can do about that.
::EDIT::  THE WEBSITE POSTED PREVIOUSLY IS NOT THE OFFICIAL ROSETTA STONE WEBSITE.
THERE IS NO CONTACT INFORMATION. THEY SEEM TO BE SELLING BOOTLEGGED COPIES.

Reader Email: Exodite Eldar Colors

by SandWyrm

Korona Writes:
Hey Sand,

Korona here, I'm in a bit of a mess with some painting, hopefully you're not too busy and can give a few pointers? I have some "Exodite Eldar" I've been kitbashing from Wood Elf and Dark Eldar bits.

Codex Performance At The NOVA (updated)

by SandWyrm

I'm sure that Mike will be releasing all sorts of Stats and charts for us to munch on in the coming weeks, but I thought I'd make a chart out of the info he's already released on overall codex performance at this year's NOVA Open.

Reader Email: How To Paint Black?

by SandWyrm

Jonathon Writes:
Hello Sandwyrm,

I was hoping you would be willing to share how you went about painting the black on this Sanguinary Guard model. Looking at some WiP pictures from this battle report and your description for this eBay bid get the impression it is a base coat of light grey* followed by a couple of washes. Similar to what Dezartfox did here.

Cheers, Jonathon

The Good, The Bad, and The Difficult

There is something that needs to be said... that has needed to be said for a long time, really.  By and large, there aren't armies that are better than others.

There are armies that are easier than others.

Some tears from Spaguatyrine after the Nova Open!

by Spaguatyrine

I hate to get a little emo, but I just got home from Nova a few days ago and haven't had time to write up my reports from the Nova Invitational where I won best overall/Ren Man for the invitational.  The issue is...

NOVA: SandWyrm's Games - Part III

by SandWyrm

...Continued from Part II.

So at the end of Day 1, there I was with 1 Win and 3 Losses. To salve my wounded pride (and terrain frustrations) a bit, I went out drinking with Farmpunk and Spag. Three 7 & 7's later (it doesn't take much), I was feeling beeeeeeeeetter (hic). Of course we ended up eating/drinking with a bunch of other NOVA guys and got into arcane half-drunken arguments over such subjects as whether Walkers can pivot to shoot at something if they're immobilized.

It's right there in the rules guys! Of course they can! :P

NOVA: SandWyrm's Games Part II

by SandWyrm

Continued from here.

(BTW, We're getting a lot of painting questions. I'll get to them after I finish the tourney reports. -SW)

Ok... So I'm 2 games into the NOVA Open, and my record is 0-2. Not good. And the one victory I did have (Whiskey Challenge) for the weekend was kind of close for comfort. If I was going to have any chance at all at Best Overall, I needed to start winning some games!
