Awe... GW Loves Me!

by SandWyrm

In the absence of an actual 6th Edition rulebook to look at, I might as well dive into the well of unsubstantiated rumors and see what lovely gifts GW is giving me in a few weeks. Well, specifically my Sang Guard army. By all accounts my Tau will have to remain on the shelf for a year or two yet. But as long as I don't mind playing Space Marine: The Game 40K, there seems to be some good stuff coming for the Emo Wing.

First up, here's my Sanguinary Guard list, which I've been using for over a year now, and have been quite pleased with. They've even held up pretty well versus Spag's Grey Knights, and that's saying something. :)

    HQ
225    Dante

    Elites
90    Sanguinary Priest w/Jump Pack, Power Weapon
75    Sanguinary Priest w/Jump Pack

    Troops
250    Sanguinary Guard Squad w/2 x Infernus Pistol, Chapter Banner
220    Sanguinary Guard Squad w/2 x Infernus Pistol
220    Sanguinary Guard Squad w/2 x Infernus Pistol
230    Sanguinary Guard Squad w/2 x Infernus Pistol, Power Fist
230    Sanguinary Guard Squad w/2 x Infernus Pistol, Power Fist

    Fast Attack
140    2 x Land Speeder w/Heavy Flamer, Multi-Melta
140    2 x Land Speeder w/Heavy Flamer, Multi-Melta
180    2 x Land Speeder w/Heavy Bolter, Typhoon Missile Launcher

Total: 2000 Points

So let's look at what 6th Edition gifts GW is supposedly going to drop on my army.

1) Power Weapons Are Going To Be AP3

At first this might seem like a big downer, as my Sang Guard are all carrying Power Weapons. But this change also means that I'll be safe from most of the things that have been able to kill me in close combat. And close combat is where you have to be able to kill me in order to win. :)

There's also the odd chance that my Master Crafted 2-handed power weapons might be given AP2 in the FAQ, which would let me take on Terminators. While most Termies without Fists or Chainfists would have trouble killing me in return.

AND...  there's always the possibility that GK Purifiers will not have true Force Weapons, making their I6 Halberds only AP3 instead. Awe! Mephiston happy!

2) Master Crafted Power Weapons Will Give You A 5+ Invulnerable Save

Hey now! I really will be an army of flying Terminators!

3) Land Speeders Will Always Have At Least A 5+ Cover Save

Supposedly this comes from the new 'Jink' rule. Cool. This only helps me, since I rely on my Speeders for fire support. I guess GW really wants to sell that new overcosted Stormtalon model. :)

4) I Can Group Up My Reserves

Supposedly we'll all be able to group up our reserves into 'Reserve Groups' which come in together on one die. So that means I can put all but 2 of my units in one group and leave the last 2 separate for 3 dice that can be (thanks to Decent of Angels) re-rolled. If any one of them succeeds, the group can come on. Nice.

5) Unit With Jump Packs Can Re-Roll Their Charge Distance

All good for me. Not so good for everyone else. :)

6) Dante Will Be Rolling Up Special Rules

Seems that everyone's general will get some sort of random special ability before the battle. There's a 'Personal' chart and a 'Leadership' chart. Seeing as how my entire army is already Ld10 and fearless, I don't need a leadership boost. So I can try for the random rule that makes Dante scoring. :)

7) I Can Buy Terrain To Hide Behind

So can everyone else. But having a nice building to hide behind will really boost my survivability in the early game. A 6" high wall that's 12" long should do nicely. :)

8) 40K Terrain Is Getting Fantasy's Screwed Up Random System

Awe. Did that wood just eat your Guard? Good thing I can just jump over it. :)

9) Land Raiders Will Be Making A Comeback

Man! I LOVE fighting Land Raiders!

Sure, they'll have a few more structure points or whatever. But I can deal with it. Make the Termies get out and they can try and play tag with me. :)

10) McPhisty Gets MORE Psychic Powers

Which, you know, isn't bad at all. At worst he'll get the same 3 he has now. At best he might get to roll up 1 or 2 more.

Conclusion

So while everyone else will have to buy bucket loads of new stuff in order to win, I should be good. Assuming the rumors hold up, my army will go from being Pretty Good but not great to BOW DOWN BEFORE THY FEATHERED MASTERS AND GIVE US BELLA YOU FRAKIN' SPACE PUPPIES!!!

Or something like that. Maybe I'll have to paint them after all. :)

Of course the downside is that everyone will be playing Sang Guard armies pretty soon. As they're one of the cheaper army options. Oh well...

    1. Let's be honest, collecting Marines will always be the safe choice when it comes to new editions. :)

    2. I play BA and tbh I don't think it will come to pass.

  5. We will see. I doubt that your power weapons would be ap2 and everyone else's would be ap3, but I am happy to see an exciting post.

    1. It's more about sarcasm than excitement Spag.

I don't really expect to enjoy the new edition like I used to enjoy 5th; but at least I'll be able to play competitively without spending much on upgrades. All my actual hobby money is going towards new terrain for Flames of War.

  6. I wager my Plasma Chaos would love to see you field this force :)

    1. Sang Guard just don't work at 1500, so the result is not surprising. Replace the Sanguinor with some MM/HF support speeders and it would have at least been more interesting.

My list RAPES Mech Eldar consistently at 1750+ BTW. Because I'm faster than they are.

  8. Fancy new roolz still won't be getting me back into G-Dub's games. I just can't do it. I've tasted the sweet nectar of gaming companys who actually gives a damn about thier costumers. Haha. Good ol' FoW and Warma-hordes.

    1. Yeah, Flames is what I'm still excited about. There's a big mid-war tourney here at the end of the month and I'm busily painting up my Germans for it. What? My 4 year old army book is still competitive? No way!

I have so little real interest in 6th Edition that I'm not buying anything till I can get the starter-set rulebook off of eBay come August/September.

  9. Every rumor makes me go from Awesome! to DOOM! and back again.

The psychic schools chart is out now, and it seems Eldar get 2 of 5 of the schools while Marines get 4 of 5. DURRRR... Freaking Guard have 4 schools! No Imperial army has less than 3. It's not like Eldar are supposed to be the greatest psykers in the galaxy or anything. Could be worse, most other xenos get none. The exception is Tyranids who get 3.

I think a lot of people are going to play Eldar this edition. As in they will ally a Farseer with runes of warding and 3 rangers for the psychic defense. That is if they don't nerf runes.

Don't worry xenos players you can always buy a Space Marine army and ally some of your units. Unless you are Tyranids, Dark Eldar, or Necrons. You guys can't ally.

  10. From what I've seen, 6th ed (Space Marine: The Gathering) is still all about the glory boyz. ok, so Nids and Eldar got minor cookies, but the FotM Marines still got the biggest piece of the cookie pie. IG got a slice.
I think it's safe to consider Sisters a Pseudo-Xenos codex. Maybe even Templar. Maybe GW gave the anti-psyker armies a crumb buried in there, but I doubt it.

This will be the edition of Magic the Space Marine. Gotta catch 'em all!

I suppose now everyone can cherry pick from multiple armies, and buy larger contingents of multiple armies that are awesomesauce combos.

I forsee Space Wolf / Farseer and Pathfinders a lot.
Maybe GK / IG for some meltavets.

I agree with CaulynDarr. There's gonna be a whole lot of Eldar moving off the shelf / Ebay.

I guess I can play GK's with St. Celestine. lol

    1. IG got a slice because their Chimera bunkers got nerfed. Total re-tool of an expensive army? No thanks. Give me my Marines please.

  11. I still have hope. Maybe they will allow Warlocks to be counted as psykers who can exchange their power for one from the schools. How nice it would be to have 8 guys with the hallucination power(24" range. Roll a die: 1-2 pinned, 2-4 cant shoot or attack in cc, 5-6 unit smacks itself in the face once for each model with strongest weapon).

    3. You should at least wait to read the full rulebook and FAQ before rage quitting. Now what are you going to do if they end up being decent?

  15. I would be surprised if the allies rules get used in games smaller than 2000 points. I know in Warhammer Fantasy I have never seen it used except in team tournaments and huge point games.

    1. It depends on if the rule is listed as optional or not. If it's in the game as a required rule, I say we should roll with it. I'm not a fan of allies, but it might be the only way for a couple of the armies to stay competitive in this edition.
