"Richard" tactics with uberdark

by Uberdark

What?  Uberdark has tactics to discuss?  The sky is falling and Rionnay must have stopped using his Dr. Pepper can.  (inside joke)

So I was reading on BOLS the latest article here.  http://www.belloflostsouls.net/2011/03/spacecurves-tactics-class-flame.html  Talking about flame deflection, a very good article considering I had this happen to me months ago, and have since tried to master it.  A comment struck me about how its a "Richard" move.  So I thought about some of the Richard moves I have done.  One in particular is one of my personal favorites.  I only use this in a game when I go first, because it CAN hurt you immensely.

The tactic:  During deployment, set all your vehicles up so the side armor is facing the field.  This basically leaves you open for a crap ton of attacks to side armor yes, but here is the little trick.  During your turn, you may pivot your vehicles, effectively giving them (depending on size) a good extra three to four inches before movement.

the downside:  PRAY TO THE GODS YOU DONT LOSE INITIATIVE.

lol.

so not much more to it than that.
enjoy.

  1. Sadly the movement trick is the hight of lame and a fair few people would look at you like you had just killed their pets, a small percentage would applaud your skills and the rest would just pack up and leave you to it for playing against the spirit of the game.

The flamer thing is fair enough, ive done it for ages, works just fine with units as well flaming the one at the back and getting the one at the front etc

  2. Dalinair: I totally agree with its lameness. Thus the title of my post. The point is, its a tactic, it relies on using the rules and bending them to your own advantage, just like wound allocation, flamer dispersement, and a myriad of other tricks. I dont know if its against the spirit of the game as much as its just bending rules to work out a better advantage. Anytime someone brings a new thing out on me that floors me I just shrug and go on, and then wait to use it to help me in my next game.

  3. Well, I would say the spirit of the game is to try and emulate a real battlefield and this tactic is such an abstract use of the rules with no analogue in reality that it would count against the spirit of the game.

If the spirit of the game to you is a set of abstract rules to use in order to play a competitive game.. than no, it isn't against the spirit of the game.

  4. to me its a tactic. plain and simple. people use gaps in rules systmes all of the time. do i use this tactic in friendly games? nope, not one bit. Cause according to the post, its a "richard" move.

  6. and i thank you for being closer to my orks. :P i believe we are tied now farmpunk. both have one win against each other and a tie. we need to get a good battle on. id like to see you, wyrm, spag and me in a 4 man battle. teams of course.

  7. I wouldn't pull this on a new player, but it's a valid tactic.

  8. Custom built Ork Battlewagon at, what would it have to be... 25" long to possibly tank shock first turn?

Awkward to use and kinda silly, but there it is...

  9. in a spearhead deployment i have tanked shocked someone before on turn 1. this was against someone who had it coming though. hehe. oh brittle joe.

  10. in Spearhead, you can first turn assault people.

Land Raider Crusader, with Termies, deployed in the front corner, charging towards the same side front corner (it's about 18" apart)

  11. Uh...Who wants me on their team?? :)

    ReplyDelete
  12. actually, according to my maths,

    it's closer to 17".
    sqrt((12^2) + (12^2))=16.97"

  13. hmm. 3 imperials and an ork.

Spag can be on my team. You bring the longfangs, I'll bring the Ex's and immO's

  14. you know i could be down with that. 3 against 1. seriously. we would have to plan this. and i'd be sure and show my side armor the entire first turn. lol

  15. I thought Ex's came with fangs already? ;)

  16. I don't mind the vehicle rotation nearly as much as the flamer trick.

Considering the lengths you have to go to in order to get a cover save with said vehicles, usually you're denying yourself a save (granted the Orks don't care, but...) to get that extra inch or two. This one I think is a standard tactic with pro's and con's.

On the other hand, any Dark Eldar player that decided to fly in front of a land raider and a unit of marines and disembark without blasting them both to smitherines kinda deserves to get melta-flamed to death. Just sayin'...

  17. Hmm,

I will play with Farmpunk if that is ok with you two! So might we say 3000 a side? 1500 each? :)

  18. Can we talk about the Mawloc Trick I love to use lol :-D

Best trick in the book. One of those things when I have someone deploy against me and they allow me to do it I just giggle on the inside. Record is 2 landraider, one had ragnar, logan, arjac, 10 wolf guard in it. with one mawloc.

I also have the "bate and switch." a.k.a the terma meat shield.

P.s. Since GW is SOOOO amazing that they don't make spore pods I made 2 and forgot them in muncie. Here I am in kokomo and needing spore pods. . . sooooo I DPed my opponent. . . I used Dr.Pepper, keep it PG.

  19. rionnay: thats not the dr. pepper im talking about. hehe.

    other 3: 1500 sounds good.

  20. >_< which can are you talking about?

  21. Maybe I'm just ignorant on pivoting, but aren't you "supposed" to pivot "on the spot" without gaining ground?

    ReplyDelete
  22. You're supposed to pivot around the center of the vehicle. So this move is perfectly legal.

  23. On a side note there guys, in a crusader stationed on the front of your line, side armour showing, pivot first turn, moving 12", disembarking terminators (or at least one) and assault 5.5"...on Pitched battle. Just wanted to put that out there. I know it shouldn't work, but the nice gaps in the rules, and the fact that only the back of the base need be touching the 2" mark on the disembark, you can really assault first turn on pirched. It is a real bitch when polaying kill points games if you can hit two tanks on the first turn auto hitting because they are considered to have not moved in the previous turn...those thunderhammers can really chew through the front lines!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Exact math on that is as follows:

    24" gap.

    3" pivot leaves a 21 inch gap

    12" move leaves a 9" gap.

3.5 inch disembark (roughly, I'm being to lazy to go measure a base at 6 in the morning) leaves 5.5"

    6 inch assault 1st turn out of a crusader/redeemer/godhammer.

And who said Marines were not cheap?!

  25. @Zerke,

I am all for trying to win, but that would cause a slight movement of my knuckles to someone's facial area.

  26. if it was ard boys though, you bet your butt i would do this trick. lol.

  27. I can imagine Orks doing this maneuver in the superlong Battlewagon with defrolla ;)
