It's not a bad list, but I do see some room for improvement.

First off, the Hydras are a static choice. In that they don't want to move, while the rest of your force does. So I'd question their synergy with the rest of your list.

Secondly, a 1750 point force needs more troops than you have here. You have 3, while I'd normally recommend 4-5, depending on their resiliency.

Thirdly, you're very Russ-heavy. I know that you want to do a tank-heavy force, but I honestly don't have any use for more than 2 Russes at 1750. Usually, I take a Demolisher with a Hull Flamer and a Vanilla Russ with a Lascannon. Russes just don't have the duality needed to equally threaten both troops and other tanks. The ratio is more like 70% anti-troop and 30% anti-armor. So spamming them makes little sense. Drop 2 and buy more Vet Chimeltas. They have the duality that you need.

Next up, your CCS is outfitted for a defensive role (Plasma Guns). This makes sense if you're ordering platoons around, but in a Mechanized list they need to be up front leading the charge into mid-field. So give them meltas and hand off the plasmas to a Vet squad that can baby-sit home plate.

Lastly, there's the Devil Dogs. If you're going to use them for anti-tank work, then give them hull multi-meltas so they can do it properly. Personally I'd drop the Hydras and add in a regular Hellhound too.

  1. yep.... your lack of troops really will hurt with a 1750 list. remember that you still need to hold objectives. and tbh i have to agree with sandwyrm on those meltas. just evil they are.

here is one difference to consider though. the momentum of the force is meant to continually move forward, and the flak tanks stay back. i actually like this. i would keep them back and use them as a good cover for your army. dropping a russ seems like the best bet and working up more troops should really help out with your tactics and holding objectives will be key.

  2. I disagree with Sandwyrm. Keep the Hydras. When I play my guard which seems to be less often with since playing My Wolves, the Hydras are by far the best unit on the board. I don't think you need 5 units of troops at 1750 but 4 is a must. You could drop 1 basic russ and add another unit in a chimera. I also like your PCS. You get 5 plasma guns out the top with longer range than the meltas. The only thing I might do is add carapace armor to them for overheating.

This is just my opinion, but the hull lascannon on a demolisher and a basic russ is a waste. The points can be used for better options and upgrades. I have been very successful with 2 demolishers in a squadron with 1 of them taking Multi-Melta sponsons. You only have a 24" range anyway with the big gun, and the enemy will really think twice about getting within 24" of that squadron.

I also hope you are taking heavy bolters on the hydras.

  3. Spangy loves his Hydras, but it really comes down to how you play your army.

I get frustrated with Hydras because they want to stay static and I'm a very mobile player; I'm always moving my tanks around for the best firing angle. So anything I shoot the Hydras at is very likely to get a cover save. Whereas a Russ can scoot around and get some cover-free shots in.

If you play a more static game though, sure. Take some Hydras. But the list I commented on is inherently a mobile one.

  4. Thanks alot for the comments on the list.

Only saw it now :) I have been too busy with my final thesis the last couple of months.

I have made some changes to the list, including:
    - Meltas in the CCS instead of Plasmas.
    - Adding an extra Chimera with a plasma squad
    - Multi Meltas on the Devil Dogs
    - Removing a battle tank to pay for the changes and additions.

I have decided to keep the Hydras, I fancy them and like the support they offer.

Regarding the Russ's, S far I decided to stay on 3, to demos and one battle tank. Im not sure id that is how its gonna be, but I like the idea of as much tanks and panzer as possible, as that was kind of the idea with the list :)
